Ebola? Epidemic or Blown out of Proportion?

Lately, if you have been watching the News as much as I have, you would probably know that one of the main topics besides ISIS is Ebola. Ebola has been the topic of investigation for many people around the world and especially in the United States. I know everyone has heard about the Nurses and Doctors in states such as Texas, New York City, and many others that have contracted the Ebola virus, but my question to all of this is, are we dealing with an epidemic or is Ebola totally blown out of proportion? To really answer this question, we first need to understand what is Ebola and where it originated from.

According to the CDC website, "Ebola is caused by infection with a virus family Filoviridae, genus Ebolavirus. There are five identified Ebola virus species, four of which are known to cause diseases in humans: Ebola virus (Zaire ebolavirus); Sudan virus (Sudan ebolavirus); Taï  Forest virus (Taï Forest ebolavirus, formerly Côte d’Ivoire ebolavirus); and Bundibugyo virus (Bundibugyo ebolavirus). The fifth, Reston virus (Reston ebolavirus), has caused disease in nonhuman primates, but not in humans. "Ebola viruses are found in several African countries. Ebola was first discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since then, outbreaks have appeared sporadically in Africa. The natural reservoir host of Ebola virus remains unknown. However, on the basis of evidence and the nature of similar viruses, researchers believe that the virus is animal-borne and that bats are the most likely reservoir. Four of the five virus strains occur in an animal host native to Africa."

In America, they try to mask this outbreak but making it seem like it is under control; but yet there were medical professionals who contracted this disease from volunteering help in Africa, who were still able to travel freely throughout the country and around the American public, as well as people on the airlines they were flying with. Now if we look at the devastation in African countries affected by this disease, its pretty serious, over thousands of people are dying each and everyday, many videos I have watched from down in Africa, show bodies just lying in the streets, but there is nothing to worry about as the American news and government say to the American public, but oh there is something to worry, something very big and serious to worry about. Any type of disease that spreads as fast as Ebola is and kills this many people is very concerning, the fact that these medical professionals have tried to quarantine and prevent this virus from spreading and still has it very alarming and people should not take what the media or our government is saying, we truly have an epidemic growing on our hands.

Furthermore, I do think we have an epidemic here, anything that is able to spread this fast and kill this many people is a problem, and on top of that there really is no cure for Ebola. Also, I feel that not enough has been done to securely contain this disease, like stated before, the fact that these medical professionals were able to freely fly from Liberia to the United States without being quarantined for observations, is a huge problem for me and shows a huge hole in U.S. security and the amount of time critical information may be relied back to our government in drastic issues such as Ebola spreading from Africa. Not saying, that is has spread to really anyone in the U.S., just the fact that there "were" people in America who had contracted Ebola.
